The police officer who shot an unarmed mask vendor during the demonstrations held in Nairobi on June 17, 2025, has been arrested.
The protests, which called for the resignation of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, turned into chaos after goons infiltrated the protesters.
In one of the videos that has elicited public uproar, two anti-riot officers cornered an unarmed mask vendor along Moi Avenue and beat him to a pulp before opening fire at close range.

According to a statement signed by the National Police Service Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the officer was apprehended following Police Inspector-General Douglas Kanja's orders.
The Service, however, did not reveal the officer's name or release a photo certifying his arrest as is the norm.
The NPS also castigated the group of goons armed with crude weapons, citing that such individuals will face the full arm of the law.
"Following this incident, the Inspector-General National Police Service has ordered the immediate arrest, investigation and arraignment in court of the involved officer. The said police officer has since been arrested," the statement read in part.
"Furthermore, NPS has noted a group of goons armed with crude weapons, in today’s protests within the CBD. The Service takes great exception and does not condone such unlawful groupings."
"Such individuals will be handled firmly, according to the law. Consequently, investigations have commenced to identify and deal with the criminals accordingly."
The police service, in the statement released Tuesday evening, noted that the victim was taken to hospital and he is currently receiving medical attention.
The statement comes amid a public outcry for justice over police brutality witnessed in the past weeks.
